Nuvi 660 firmware update

Didn't know what happened, till i checked on this site. Your Advise saved the day. Thank You Very Much. Thanks for nothing Garmin. Their update was released while we were on vacation, and as luck would have it, my t completely died on me in the middle of my vacation.

When I called customer suppoort they said " send it to us for repair". I "not so politely suggested to them that "real" customer support should have offered to overnight me a "loaner" gps to my hotel until I got home. After all, the reason I bought the damn thing was for traveling, and obviously a dead gps on vacation is useless..

I'm getting ready to send my unit back but I have a question for you. Will they repair "my" unit or with they send me a refurbished one?

I asked customer support and they said it would be "my" unit, but obviously I don't know whether or not to believe them. Roland - if you read through this thread there are detailed instructions on fixing the unit yourself. All you need to do is open the case and remove the battery for a few seconds.

Then reassemble the unit and run webupdater. From what I've read it only takes a couple of minutes to fix the unit yourself. I can't speak from personal experience, I only have a Remove the Torx screws may be a size 4, 5 or 6 Torx - carefully pop the back off You should then have your unit working again.

The longest part of the process to fix is downloading and installing with web updater I too got the warning on my the other day. I continued to use it for the better part of the day and performed the update once I returned home. I am very glad this site exists so that we can compare "war stories" and make informed decisions regarding the installation of updates and fixes such as cracking the unit and pulling the battery leads off.

The next day we where supposed to go thru Maine and then into Boston - that was fun with paper maps and no GPS. Anyways since I couldn't find a fix at the time and had all my poi's and route in my laptop, I bought a T and loaded it to get me home.

Now that I got home I find that a torx 5 and 1 minute of work will fix it and then a few minutes for the update. Now I can decide which I like better the or the The traffic notification was better with the but doesn't find a fm channel for you to pipe the sound to your car speakers.

I suppose that is actually dependant on the power cord features. I like the MSN features on the but don't think they are worth the price where I live. Guess I had better do the update for my wifes , I don't desire to hear the complaints if I don't Thanks for the "How to" info on how tofix it if it bricks. This might be a "normal" thing if I do not get the 'via' at a point that I actually pass through.

We know our customers rely upon their Garmin GPS device s , especially during the summer travel season, and we regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused. We are committed to developing products that are known for their quality and reliability and will continue to work diligently to earn the trust of our customers. My T failed about 10 days ago. Returned to Amazon and ordered another. It arrived July 1. I immediately registered and updated OS and maps. The OS update was to 4.

This morning I saw the email to use WebUpdater to apply an emergency patch. I did that but no patch was applied so I assumed it was in 4. I then went to MyGarmin and used software update. It said I needed a firmware update. I applied that patch without incident and reported the circumstances to Tech Support. I do not know how to determine the current firmware version. If someone will tell my how to determine the version number I will post the result. Unit appears to be operating normally. Mine updated firmware and turned itself off for good.

Rest in peace. Got an RMA, sent it to Garmin, back in a week good as new - til next time. Got the email for the mandatory firmware update while the unit was enroute to Garmin. What timing. I just removed the two screw but I have hard time uncapping it. Is there a trick to do it without breaking it?

It worked and i am very thanful to all of you. My unit broke during my first holiday and was going to go for my second trip next friday without my precious gadget.. With it plugged in I see SW version 3. How many have sent their "bricked" units back to Garmin under the interpretation that they are getting an exchange. Only to get a repair????? Log In Sign Up. To compound the issue, the I don't believe allows more than one map on the SD card. You bring up an interesting point. Now to address the Fat vs Fat32 statement. You cannot install a map into internal memory over 2 GB, since total internal memory on is 1.

The map must be installed on the SD Card. Either card is recognized on the Backwards compatibility is exactly why the situation you describe exists. I don't pretend to understand every little nuance regarding this, but in essence the can read the FAT32 card but won't see anything more than the first 2GB on the card, regardless of how large the card is. The file system difference would also explain in part why the W received an update to be able to read a second map off the card, but the didn't.

The W received an update to be able to read two maps on the SD card while the never got this update. The main reason why is that Garmin would have had to completely rewrite the firmware to understand FAT32, and it either wasn't possible due to a technical limitation, whether hardware or software, or wasn't feasible due to the age of the device.

For the , the FAT file system plus the size of the map images approaching 2GB plus Garmin not offering an update for the device will eventually prevent these devices from ever having the entirety of North America on board. The 7XX series was the first to do away with the 2GB restiction. I still like my as a backup, it's simple and always reliable.

The battery is 6 years old and still holds a very strong charge. My 's battery starts to lose the full charge in about 5 minutes. So much for new and improved. You will probably be able to install the full NA map on your 6xx for quite some time by splitting it between the internal and SD memory.

Install a partial map in internal memory, then install the remaining regions on SD. That way each file will be less than 2 GB. Good to know-. Which is a PITA, but you are right about splitting the map. But considering that the 6xx series is 7 years old and predates the lifetime map subscription offering by 4 years, I think it is a tribute to Garmin that they have kept the compatibility with map updates an option on these old devices at all.

Ask someone who bought a Navigon, Mio or TomTom in what options they have for map updates. Just wanted to be sure. I bought lifetime maps for my Zumo and as some folks pointed out, the older units won't take the newer maps in whole. I have to split them onto a card, although it still works seamlessly when using it.

In fact, I use 2 cards both configured identically One is the last version Maps and other card is the current version Maps When the next version maps comes out, on the older version card I delete the 3 re-named map files, and update just the SD card in my computer, which is faster than doing it via the garmin.

Then I re-name the files as per the link posted above, and then pull the other SD Card out of the Garmin which now becomes the new Last version maps, and put in the just updated SD Card, and power up Works like a champ Guess I will soon have to learn how to split maps on my JanJ, I like your rotating 2 SD cards idea. Nothing better than always having a known good backup. This is the internal storage, yes?

The Does anyone have any hard reference or personal experience that a gmapprom. Thanks, -cj. We already established this upthread.

I don't care to have just certain regions installed. Using a 4 GB card will allow you to put the full map on the card, but your unit may not read a file larger than 2GB. Sadly, the nuvi has a much more convoluted way to be able to install City Navigator North America. The nuvi can only read files under 2GB in size and the current You will still need the SD card and 4GB is a good size for this task, but the SD card size doesn't overcome the 2GB filesize limit of the old nuvi A quick summary of what you'll find in the above link--in case I miss a detail, believe what's in the above link.

Most of what applies to you appears on pages of the link, but you'll want to understand page 1, too:. The map file will be called gmapprom. The map file will be named gmapsupp. If that is the case Which I gladly selected. How would I have selected this, then go back and select the remainder of NA Mexico, islands?

This is the part I can't clearly understand Then what would be the naming convention of the two map files on same SD card? I'm trying to get my head wrapped around the operational steps to download 2 separate files using Express.. For "Next" time I don't own a so I base my answers on what I've read here and hope that I remember correctly. If this is correct, the only way to get all of North America installed for use with a is to have some of the map in the nuvi gmapprom.

Getting lose is never fun, but the easy answer is to look for a Garmin GPS free maps download. A free Garmin map update is easy enough to find and am I going to tell you how. Garmin actually release free map updates themselves to their customer base, and downloading one is relatively straight forward.

Knowing how to update Garmin Nuvi products is very easy and all the instructions to do so are on the Garmin website. Firstly go to the Garmin website and access their mapping section. On there you will need to select the nuMaps Guarantee option.
